Jan 05,2026PE ball valve is a key control component widely used in polyethylene pipeline systems such as gas transmission, water supply engineering, agricultural irrigation, and chemical medium transportation. Its main advantages include strong corrosion resistance, good sealing performance, light weight, and flexible connection methods. As a plastic valve, the friction performance of its internal structure has an important impact on the switch sensitivity, sealing reliability, and service life. In the manufacturing process of PE ball valves, whether the ball is surface polished becomes one of the key factors in evaluating its performance.
What is the surface polishing of the ball of PE ball valve?
The core component of PE ball valve is the ball, which is usually manufactured by injection molding or machining using PE100 or polymer engineering plastics. Polishing refers to mechanical grinding or fine processing of the ball surface to achieve a higher surface finish, thereby reducing the friction resistance between the ball and the sealing ring.
Surface polishing not only improves the torque performance when the valve is opened and closed, but also directly affects the wear of the sealing surface during long-term operation. The smooth ball surface can reduce the shear force on the sealing material and increase the service life of the sealing ring, especially under frequent operation or high pressure difference.
Polishing Process Practice in PE Ball Valve Manufacturing
In the production of high-end PE ball valves, the following polishing methods are usually used for the ball surface:
Mold polishing: Mirror-grade polishing of the mold surface before injection molding to ensure that the ball has a high finish after demolding. This process is suitable for large quantities of standard parts.
CNC machining polishing: Fine machining of the ball by CNC machine tools, especially in the manufacture of non-standard valves or large-diameter balls, with meticulous grinding and mirror treatment.
Chemical polishing or heat treatment polishing: Some manufacturers use hot air surface treatment or chemical methods to optimize the molecular layer of the ball surface to improve lubrication performance.
Manual grinding: For special PE ball valves, such as those requiring ultra-high sealing or high-precision occasions, manual grinding and detection equipment are used to ensure that the ball reaches the mirror level.
These processes not only improve the matching accuracy between the ball and the sealing seat, but also reduce the starting torque, which is especially suitable for application environments that require operational sensitivity in pneumatic and electric control systems.
The influence of ball surface finish on friction performance
During the opening and closing process of PE ball valve, there is contact movement between the ball and the sealing ring. If the surface of the ball is rough, it is easy to form local friction points, leading to the following problems:
The valve is difficult to open, and greater torque is required for manual operation;
The local wear of the sealing ring is accelerated, reducing the sealing performance;
Scratches or grooves are easily formed under the scouring of high-speed media, resulting in leakage;
Vibration or jamming occurs during long-term opening and closing.
The ball with surface polishing has a lower friction coefficient and fits more evenly with the sealing seat, which effectively improves the smoothness of valve opening and closing and the sealing stability, especially when used in low temperature, corrosive or powdery media.
There are differences in polishing of products from different manufacturers
The current PE ball valve market has a wide variety of products and uneven manufacturing processes. Some low-cost ball valves are made of ordinary injection molding, and the ball has not been additionally processed, and the surface roughness is relatively high. Although it can meet the general low-pressure water pipe or irrigation system, it performs poorly in high-frequency switches, high pressure differences or gas systems.
High-end PE ball valve brands generally attach importance to the finishing process of the ball, and even provide surface roughness test reports. For example, polished balls with Ra values (average surface roughness) less than 0.8μm are widely used in urban gas trunk pipes and industrial high-purity water systems to ensure reliable system operation.
Whether polishing directly affects product performance evaluation
When selecting PE ball valve products, whether the ball surface is polished should be evaluated as a key technical parameter. Customers can refer to the following points for judgment:
Whether the product manual indicates "ball surface polishing" or "mirror ball";
Whether the manufacturer provides ball finish test standards or test reports;
Whether it is standard with low torque opening characteristics, or suitable for automation system control;
Actual sample observation of the ball to see if there are obvious mold marks, particles or processing lines.
